Traveling from Nairobi- Kenya to Uganda can be a rewarding journey filled with culture, nature, and adventure. For smooth travels, we recommend you to hire a 4×4 vehicle with good clearance; carry fuel cans, tools and spares. We advise you to have all the required documents such as valid passport, COMESA yellow card, East Africa Tourist Visa or individual country visas.
For health issues, you have to be with a yellow fever card, anti – malarials and a first aid kit. This trip will take you to different places such as Sipi Falls, Kidepo Valley National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park among other places.
You will start your trip from Nairobi. Begin your road trip from Nairobi at dawn, heading northwest through the picturesque Great Rift Valley. Stop briefly in Nakuru, then continue past rolling highlands to Eldoret for lunch. After lunch, proceed through the lush greenery of Bungoma while enjoying rural charm. You may arrive at the Busia Border by evening, do all the clearances and ensure that your East African Community passport or visa is ready. Spend your overnight in Busia Town.
The following day, you will start your journey from Busia in the morning, crossing into Uganda smoothly at the border. Drive eastward through Tororo, enjoying views of Mount Elgon in the distance. The road winds through vibrant rural landscapes and small trading centers. Stop briefly in Tororo for refreshments and then continue to Mbale, a bustling town at the foot of Mount Elgon. At arrival, check-in at your booked lodge for lunch and relaxation.
In the evening, you can explore the local culture and town markets. Exploring Mbale offers a rich dive into Ugandan culture and daily life. The town is a melting pot of the Bagisu people known for their vibrant Imbalu (circumcision) ceremonies held every even-numbered year, featuring traditional dances and rituals. You can visit the bustling Mbale Central Market, where locals trade fresh produce, crafts, textiles, and street food like chapati and Rolex (rolled eggs in chapati). Artisans sell handmade baskets, carvings, and woven mats. The market atmosphere is lively, with music, bargaining, and a strong sense of community spirit that reflects the town’s cultural diversity and warmth. Spend an overnight in Mbale.
Very early in the morning, embark on your journey to Sipi Falls via Tirinyi Road, passing through the lush landscapes and local villages. The scenic 50 km drive takes around 2 hours hence offering views of Mount Elgon and Arabica coffee plantations. Arrive at Sipi Falls, where you can hike, explore caves and enjoy the breathtaking waterfalls. The route offers rich cultural encounters with the Sabiny people and a refreshing escape into Uganda’s eastern highlands. Spend an overnight near the Sipi Falls in lodges such as Sipi River Lodge, Lacam Lodge among others.
Begin your journey by retracing your route to the main road leading to Kapchorwa. Continue towards Mbale where you will join the main road heading northeast. As you approach Moroto, consider a detour through the Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. This area offers picturesque viewpoints and opportunities to spot wildlife such as elephants and giraffes hence making a memorable break during your journey. Conclude today’s journey by entering Moroto, the capital of the Karamoja region known for its unique cultural heritage and landscapes. On this day, embark on a scenic and adventurous journey through Uganda’s remote Karamoja region. Pass through the rugged landscapes and traditional villages. Upon reaching the park (Kidepo Valley National Park), check-in at your hotel for lunch, relax and later go for a game drive where you will spot animals such as lions, elephants, cheetahs, buffaloes, Elands, Rothschild’s giraffes, Zebras and some bird species such as ostriches, Secretary Bird, Tawny Eagle among others. In the evening, return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
The following day, have breakfast and take an early morning game drive in the Narus Valley to spot more wildlife. If time allows, you can also visit Kanangorok Hot Springs and view the South Sudan border before you return to the lodge for dinner.
The following morning after having breakfast, you will embark on your journey to Gulu. Departing from the remote Savannah of Kidepo, you will pass through small towns like Kaabong and Kitgum with views of rolling hills, rural homesteads and local markets. This route offers a glimpse into the culture of the Acholi and Karamoja regions. Depending on your choice, you can have stopovers on the way to visit some cultural centers such as the Rwot of Acholi’s palace, the Lokodi memorial site, the Wii Gweng Namakora Monument among others. Lunch will be en-route. Upon reaching, check-in at your lodge for relaxation as you wait for dinner. Spend an overnight in Gulu.
Very early in the morning, take a scenic drive to Murchison Falls National Park. Depart Gulu and drive south along the Gulu–Masindi highway passing through rural landscapes and lively villages. Stop at Karuma Falls for a scenic break before entering the northern section of the park via Tangi Gate. Spend the night at a lodge inside the park.
The following day, explore Murchison Falls National Park. Take a morning game drive to spot wildlife animals such as elephants, lions, giraffes among others. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon boat cruise to the base of the powerful falls to spot water animals such as hippos, crocodiles and some water birds. At the day of the day, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
This morning, depart from Murchison Falls National Park and head to Masindi. From Masindi, follow the road through Hoima and onward to Fort Portal. This scenic journey reveals rolling hills, tea plantations and glimpses of the Albertine Rift Valley. Fort Portal is an ideal overnight stopover with comfortable lodges and views of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Very early in the morning, continue with your journey from Fort Portal to Queen Elizabeth National Park driving through scenic countryside and crater lakes. Enter the park via the northern Kasese or Katunguru Gate. Along the way, you may spot wildlife near the road or stop for a brief visit to the equator monument. Once inside the park, you can enjoy an afternoon boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel or an evening game drive in the Kasenyi Plains. In the evening, check-in at Mweya Safari Lodge dinner and overnight stay.
Today is your final leg in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Have breakfast, check-out of the lodge and get ready for your journey to the Entebbe International Airport. Departing from the park, the route winds past Kasese and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, then continues through Fort Portal and the lush tea plantations of Kibale. Join the Kampala–Fort Portal highway passing through Mubende and Mityana. Along the way, roadside markets and vibrant towns offer chances for rest and local snacks. As you approach Entebbe via Kampala, Lake Victoria comes into view, marking the journey’s end. You can spend a night in Entebbe town or head straight away to the airport to catch up with your flight to the next destination.
