This trip through East Africa will take you to different countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya while participating in various activities such as boat rides, game drives, gorilla trekking experience, golden monkey trekking among others. You will enjoy this trip at your own pace as enjoy the nature and landscapes of these four countries. For smooth travels, you are encouraged to hire a 4×4 vehicle which is in good maintenance.
Upon arrival at Entebbe international Airport, you will be welcomed by our driver guide who will orient you about the car operation and traffic rules and he will tell you the various safari activities booked with us during your East Africa Road trip safari. Later, you will drive to your booked lodge for relaxation as you prepare for the next day’s journey.
On the following day, you will embark on your journey to Murchison Falls National Park with an en-route stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for the Rhino trekking and later proceed to the park. On arrival, check-in at your lodge for dinner and night’s rest.
Begin the day with an early morning game drive on the Buligi, Albert or Queens tracks north of the river Nile. Here you will have a chance to see animals closely associated with the African Savannah such as Elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, antelopes, elephants, warthogs among others. After lunch, relax a bit and later go for a cruise along the Delta.
The cruise will take you to the bottom of the thundering falls where you will see huge crocodiles, hippos and a variety of water birds like herons, cormorants, ducks, bee-eaters, kingfishers, skimmers, fish eagle and the rare shoe bill among others. Return to the lodge for dinner and a night rest.
This morning, you will enjoy your breakfast on your journey to Kibale Forest National Park. You will have an en-route stopover in Fort portal for lunch. You can pay a visit to the Mabere Ganyina Mwiru and later connect to Kibale Forest National Park the home for the primates. On arrival, check-in at your lodge for dinner and get enough rest so that you get physically fit for the next day’s trekking experience.
On this cool morning, you will wake up early for breakfast and then head to the park headquarter for briefing about the chimpanzee trekking rules and regulations. Kibale Forest has one of the highest diversity and concentration of primates in Africa. It is one of the best places in the world to see chimpanzees.
Upon seeing these primates, you will be allowed 1 hour of taking pictures and videos and also watching these creatures as they carry out their day-to-day daily activities. Return to the starting point, have lunch and embark on another adventure to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Upon reaching the park, check-in at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Wake up on a cup of tea and then embark on a game drive in an open Savannah covered by acacia trees on the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. Search for the rare tree climbing lions resting on top of the fig trees and other animals such as elephants, buffaloes, leopards among others.
In the afternoon, go for a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a narrow band of water connecting lakes Edward and George. This is one of the most memorable experiences offering an opportunity to see Africa’s largest hippo population. In addition to these giant semi-aquatic mammals, the cruise affords unique opportunities to view other mammals and birds as they come to the water’s edge to drink and bathe. In the evening, return to your lodge for dinner and sleepovers.
After breakfast, drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park via Ishasha sector for the search for the rare tree climbing lions. Enjoy your lunch in Ishasha at any lodge or camp of your choice and then proceed to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. On arrival, check-in at the lodge for dinner and overnight.
This early morning, you will have breakfast and then transfer to the park headquarters for briefing by the ranger guide and later head into the forest to start trekking until you encounter the mountain gorillas. The trekking length depends on the movement of the gorillas. On finding them, you will be allowed to spend one hour with these gentle giants and later return to the starting point for your trekking certificates. Transfer back to the lodge where you will unwind, have dinner and stay for a night.
After an early breakfast, transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation. On arrival, have a simple visit to some of the islands such as Akampane where girls who got pregnant before marriage were punished. On this simple visit, you will enjoy the magnificent scenery and a lot of bird-life. Have lunch and after continue to Rwanda through Cyanika Border. After immigration procedures, proceed to Volcanoes National Park for the best experience of Rwanda’s epic centre for gorilla trekking experience. Upon arrival, check-in at the lodge for resting as you wait for dinner.
Wake up for an early morning breakfast and after drive to the Volcanoes National Park’s headquarters for a briefing about an activity to be done that day. You can opt to go for gorilla trekking or golden trekking activity. Volcanoes National Park is located within the Virunga massif that houses the mountain gorillas and the golden monkey alongside various mountaineering trips and winding roads in the land of a thousand hills. After briefing, start a hike into the forest and trek until you meet the family allocated to you.
Upon completing the trek, you will head back to the lodge for lunch and later in the evening, you may opt to go for a cultural tour at IbyI’wacu cultural center. Interact with the locals and in the late evening return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Today, after having breakfast, you will drive back to Kigali. In Kigali, you will have a brief visit to Kigali Genocide Memorial which was opened in 2004. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a place of remembrance and learning dedicated to the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
This memorial also serves to educate about how the Genocide against the Tutsi took shape and examines genocide in the 20th century. The memorial also includes exhibitions and facilities dedicated to healing and reconciliation. The remains of over 250,000 people are interred here. You can also visit Kandt Museum of Natural History where you can learn about the co-existence of people and their environment in the old colonial buildings. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
After an early morning breakfast, start your journey to Tanzania. Cross into the country at Rusumo. You might want to check out interesting stops along the way and have your en-route lunch. Based on the length of this trip, I think you could spread out this road trip over more than one day.
Drive through beautiful countryside and have an overnight in Mwanza. You can either stay at Malaika Beach Resort or Ryan’s Bay Hotel. On this day, you can spend the whole day chilling in Mwanza. Mwanza offers a variety of activities from exploring nature and wildlife to immersing in culture and enjoying the city’s attractions. Visitors can explore Saanane Island National Park, experience the Sukuma Museum, relax at Rock Beach Garden or take a boat trip on Lake Victoria.
Additionally, Mwanza is a popular starting point for safaris to Serengeti and Ngorongoro and it offers opportunities for bird watching, fishing and cultural experiences. After exploring all those places, return to the lodge for dinner as you prepare for safari ahead.
Today, enter Serengeti via Ndabaka Gate viewing the beautiful high lying farmland of Karatu, Maasai villages. Leaving highlands behind, descend into the heart of wild Africa with its endless plains rolling into distance as far as the eye can see. It is in this park where you can experience the wildebeest migration. During the game drive, you will also be able to spot other animals such as lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, cheetah among others. Check-in at the lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening you may decide to explore the heart of Serengeti, Seronera valley.
The area is known for its high concentration of big cats like lions, leopards, cheetahs among others and these can be spotted during the wildebeest migration that happens between the months of June to September. You will also see a whole range of wild animals roaming these grassy plains from the zebras to the naughty mongoose.
The following day after breakfast, enjoy an en-route game drive as you leave Serengeti National Park to the rugged forested hills of Ngorongoro highlands. You will pass via the Maasai villages. Upon arrival, check-in at the lodge for refreshment, lunch and later descend to the crater floor. On the way into the crater, learn some facts about this incredible natural wonder.
The Ngorongoro crater was formed around 2.5 million years ago when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed itself. After exploring the crater, return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight. Today, you will have a full day game drive inside the Ngorongoro crater, enjoy picnic lunch and return at the lodge in the late afternoon on the rim of the crater for dinner.
Ngorongoro crater referred to as the 8th wonder of the world is best known for its extraordinary natural beauty and biodiversity. Although animals can move in and out of the crater, climbing the steep caldera walls requires some effort so as to see the wildlife inside. The wildlife here include; herds of wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, elands, warthogs, hippos, giant African elephants among others. The crater is endowed with a huge population of predators such as lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and leopards.
Ngorongoro is also a home to about 500 bird species including the ostriches, flamingos and many others hence boasting bird watching. Wake-up very early in the morning and transfer to Arusha National Park. Dedicate this day to exploring Arusha National Park known for its unique landscapes and wildlife including the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, Mount Meru.
Consider a game drive to explore the base of the mountain or even take a guided walk. In the afternoon, enjoy a picnic lunch with stunning views of the park. Later in the evening, return to the lodge for relaxation and enjoy the evening in your Arusha accommodation. If you still have enough time in Arusha, you can participate in optional activities such as paying a visit to a local coffee plantation or enjoy a cooking class to learn about Tanzanian cuisine. You can also immerse yourself in local culture by visiting a nearby village or market to learn about traditional crafts and way of life.
After having breakfast, embark on your journey to Kilimanjaro. On arrival, take a day hike on the Marangu Route reaching Mandara Hut (2720m) after about 3-4 hours of hiking and enjoying views from Maundi Crater. After enjoying your lunch, you can opt to visit Materuni Village, a home of the Chagga tribe and also explore the Materuni Waterfalls if time allows. From Materuni Waterfalls, you can clearly see the breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro and on a lucky day, you will see the summit of Kilimanjaro.
When you reach the waterfalls, you will see that they are more than 80 meters high. Materuni Waterfall is one of the Waterfalls in the Mware River found in Materuni village on the edge of the Kilimanjaro Mountain Reserve. Today, depart Moshi very early in the morning and drive to northwest towards Arusha and then on to Namanga border. Before crossing, ensure that you have a valid passport, Kenya E-Visa which is applied online in advance, Yellow Fever certificate and Vehicle insurance (COMESA or Kenyan cover).
Cross into Kenya and continue to Nairobi. Arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon or evening and check-in at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay. On the way, you can have some optional stopovers for example at Ol Donyo Orok Hills near Namanga. You can also have a brief visit to Kitengela glass studios or Karen Blixen Museum in Nairobi before you check-in for dinner.
Start the day with a scenic drive from Nairobi to Lake Naivasha while enjoying the views of the Great Rift Valley. On arrival, you can check into your chosen lodge near Lake Naivasha. You can spend the day while exploring Lake Naivasha known for its diverse birdlife and hippos.
Enjoy a game drive in the surrounding areas to spot other wildlife like giraffes, water bucks, elands among others. While in Lake Naivasha, you can take a short boat trip to Crescent Island, a unique wildlife sanctuary with various species like giraffes, water bucks, elands among others.
You can also enjoy a guided walk on the island to observe the wildlife at closer range. Return to the lodge for dinner and a night rest. In the morning, drive from Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru National Park, a journey within the Rift Valley that takes about 2 hours. On arrival check-in at the lodge for lunch and relaxation.
In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive in Lake Nakuru known for its rhinos and vibrant birdlife including flamingos. You can also enjoy a picnic lunch at the Baboon Cliff viewpoint within the park. Depending on your itinerary, you can either head to Eldoret or stay overnight at a lodge within or near Lake Nakuru.
In the morning, depart from Lake Nakuru and embark on your journey to Eldoret. Drive through lush farmlands and hilly terrain of the Rift Valley. You can opt to have a stopover in Kericho for a break and a look at the tea plantations. Continue to Eldoret, a laid-back town known for its athletics legacy and cooler weather.
Check-in at the lodge, relax and enjoy the atmosphere of Eldoret as your waiting for dinner. If you still have more time, visit the nearby Sirikwa Holes believed to be ancient dwellings.
After having breakfast, embark on your journey back to Uganda (Jinja) crossing at Malaba Border. Make sure you have Uganda E-Visa, Yellow Fever certificate, Valid COMESA insurance or Uganda vehicle insurance and expect some delays depending on traffic. Arrive in Jinja, the capital adventure of Uganda in the late evening and check-in at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
This whole day, you will spend it exploring Jinja as you engage in different activities such as White-water rafting on the Nile, visiting the Source of the Nile monument, Kayaking, bungee jumping, quad biking or sunset cruise among others. In the afternoon or evening, you can head to Sipi Falls via Mbale or decide to spend a night in Jinja.
In case you slept in Jinja, you will wake up very early in the morning and head to East past Mbale into the Mount Elgon region. Arrive in Sipi, a tranquil village perched on the cliffs overlooking the Karamoja plains and have a short walk or hike to one of the three Sipi Falls.
After breakfast, you meet a local guide and start off the hike to visit all the three Sipi waterfalls. You follow a trail that is about 7 to 8km long that goes through the local communities and their farmlands of tea and banana plantations, which are the main crops grown in this area.
Between visiting each waterfall, you are treated to breathtaking landscape scenery from the green slopes of Mountain Elgon to the distant flat plains of Karamoja in the distance. Each waterfall offers an experience different from another from the plunge, beautiful views, caves to the rainbows.
The entire hike will take about 4 to 5 hours. At the end of the fun, you will have lunch in Sipi after which you travel back to Kampala with an en-route stopover in Mabira Forest. Arriving in Mabira, you will transfer to the visitors’ reception center, meet a site guide and set off for a 2-hour trek into the forest following a network of well-maintained trails under the cool canopies. Mabira is the largest forest in central Uganda spanning 306 square kilometers. It supports plenty of life including 312 species of trees and shrubs, of which some have been found to be unique to the forest.
There are over 300 species of birds, 200 months and 35 species of small animals such as Duikers, Bush buck, Squirrels, Red-tailed Monkeys, and Uganda Mangabeys which are a species of monkeys only found in Uganda.
Some of the activities you can engage in while in Mabira include; nature walks, bird watching, ziplining, mountain biking, primate tracking among others and they can only be done if you have more time in Mabira. Later proceed to Kampala/Entebbe to catch up with your flight to the next destination or spend a night in Kampala and that will mark the end of your East Africa Road trip.
